Brakes are something we get used to. We know how much pressure to apply to stop, the sounds they make, and more. After some time, a brake change is inevitable. Brake pads and rotors wear out from intense friction and heat. Also, depending on your driving patterns, vehicle, and climate, your brake pads can last anywhere between 20,000 to 80,000 miles. Brake fluid normally lasts anywhere from 2-5 years.
With such a wide range, it’s essential to get a regular brake inspection.
How Do I Know When I Need My Brakes Changed?
Brake inspection is required for yearly State Inspection, but you should bring your vehicle in for diagnosis if you experience any of the following problems:
- The vehicle pulls to one side when the brakes are applied.
- Dashboard lights or warnings come on. Your BRAKE lights, ABS light, or Check Engine light may indicate brake problems.
- Leaking brake fluid – all fluid leaks should be inspected.
- Any changes in how your brake responds.
- Shaking or vibrations when braking.
- Misfiring or stalling (could indicate a bad power brake booster).
- The brake pedal sinks to the floor when pressure is maintained.
- You hear or feel scraping or grinding during braking.
- The “brake” light on the instrument panel is lit.
- The steering wheel of the car shakes during braking.
